Twenty-nine people were arrested amid worrying scenes in South Auckland after Tonga downed Samoa in the Rugby League World Cup.
About 3000 Tonga supporters gathered in South Auckland following the 32-18 win but refused to calm festivities despite police warnings, the New Zealand Herald reports.
Celebrations turned ugly when more supporters arrived before police were called at 1am to shut down proceedings.
Police confiscated items such as pieces of wood and huge metal poles with nearby shop signage damaged.
In a separate incident, a security guard was attacked outside the stadium and taken to hospital after being king hit from behind.
About 20 people were also thrown out for bringing in banned items.
