The 21-year-old English player has been signed by the Melbourne Stars for this year’s BBL.  Brown was recently selected for England in T20Is and his continuing his development to become a world-class bowler.

But how will BBL be different for him from playing in England’s Vitality Blast competition?

Having won the title with Worcestershire in 2018, and runners up in 2019, Brown has the temperament for the occasion – but he admits he is on a steep learning curve in BBL09.

“The ground and pitches are going to play differently, so that will all have an impact on how, from my point view, batters go about scoring their runs and obviously assessing conditions is going to be different for me, because it’s not – they’re not going to be conditions that I would have seen before,” said Brown.

Brown’s debut in the BBL could have been 12 months ago, but a stress fracture put paid to that. It also ruled out a spot in the Bangladesh Premier League.

This year there are no such problems. Brown’s agent and Trent Woodhill (Assistant Coach at the Melbourne Stars) have a great relationship, and the deal for BBL09 was done.

Brown will head to Melbourne early where he will be looking to acclimatise as well as pick the brains of Steyn’s vast cricket knowledge. Having played for England in their recent T20I series, Brown has had his first real experience of cricket outside of England.

He took three wickets in his four matches at 42.66 with an economy rate of 9.84. Importantly, he was bowling at the death against experienced Blackcaps batters on smaller grounds and acquitted himself well.

Brown is aware of his added responsibilities of being an international player.

“I suppose there is added pressure, being an overseas player and there’s more expected of you," he says. "But from my point of view, I’m a very competitive person anyway, and I hold myself to high standards.

"So, my job when I walk onto the field, whether it be you’re a domestic player, or for England, or for Melbourne Stars, as an overseas player, my job is to contribute to wins hopefully and ultimately if the team’s winning then I’m happy.”

During the English winters, Brown has been studying at university, so watching BBL on television has been minimal.

However, Brown is aware of some of the power hitters he could face this summer.

“Someone like Chris Lynn or D’Arcy Short, those kinds of blokes," he said. "I’ve played against D’Arcy this year, against Durham for Worcestershire, so I know he’s a good player.

“You’re just wary of blokes like that when you know that they are going to get taken down no matter what. So, it’s more being wary of them, but I’m looking forward to bond with everyone really, it’s going to be a good challenge.”

Brown is a likeable guy who is still learning his craft yet operates at a high level. Fans of the Melbourne Stars are going to see an excellent T20 bowler in their colours.

He has risen to every challenge that cricket has thrown at him so far, and the BBL will be no different. Brown is ready and cannot wait for the BBL season to start.

He added: “Really looking forward to just getting out there and being in the city of Melbourne.

"I’ve heard great things about it, and playing at the MCG in front of loads of fans is going to be amazing.”
