SURF LIFE SAVING: A SNAPSHOT
Few sports are as distinctly Australian as Surf Life Saving. When we decided to embrace the ocean as a site of active recreation in the early part of the 20th century, the need for a lifesaving movement – to protect and save lives – grew. From those early days, Surf Life Saving became part of the fabric of our country – today it’s one of the largest and most valuable volunteer organisations in the world.
To hone their surf survival skills, competitions emerged between clubs. Surf sports are now contested nationally by more than 87,000 competitors representing 311 clubs. From these ranks emerge the “bronzed Aussie” heroes to generations of Nippers.
Surf clubs welcome participants regardless of age or ethnicity. To find out more, go to www.sls.com.au
