Six NRL stars will be interrogated in relation to match-fixing with a prominent player’s phone seized by police.
Detectives from Strike Force Nuralda, who are backed by the Crime Commission, will investigate alleged match-fixing in three NRL games over the past two seasons involving the Manly Sea Eagles.
Players who refuse to answer questions face immediate jail time.
The investigation centres on the following three NRL games:
Manly’s 20-8 loss to South Sydney in Round 16 2015, their 20-16 loss to Parramatta in Round 24 2015, and their 22-10 loss to Parramatta in Round 7 this year.
Well-known gambler Eddie Hayson is at the cebntre of the investigation.
He has close ties to former Manly and Parramatta playmaker Kieran Foran who played for Manly in 2015 before shifting to Parramatta this season.
The six players were allegedly paid $50,000 each to throw a match last season from a bet of $700,000 placed on one game.
An $18,000 bet was placed on Parramatta to beat Manly by five points or more with the wager placed just moments before the game.
The investigation is expected to take several months and could hinder Foran’s attempt to play in 2017 after he was released by the Eels earlier this season for “personal reasons”.
Hayson denies any involvement with the NRL stating any player found guilty will be banned from the game for life.
