The countdown continues to the highly anticipated WBC/WBA Super Welterweight championship showdown between Mexico’s Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Floyd “Money” Mayweather. At their respective seven-day weigh-ins Alvarez tipped the scales at 157.4 pounds and Floyd at 152.2.
Mayweather has copped criticism during his career for not taking the best fight on offer. But to his credit, even with the guaranteed money rolling in from his TV deal, the pound-for-pound king eschewed safer options and chose to take on the prince of Mexico in Alvarez. “Age gap” doesn’t even begin to describe the difference between the two – Mayweather is 36, Alvarez is 23 – and the match-up is shaping as the cagey Mayweather staving off decline against the potential of Canelo (Spanish for “cinnamon”, owing to Alvarez’ red hair), who hasn’t met an opponent remotely close to Mayweather’s class.
Floyd will be favoured, and should have the edge style-wise. But good, young boxers find out if they’re great fighters in circumstances like these, and no less an authority than Mexican corner sage Nacho Beristain believes Alvarez can win.
Main Event will have all the action from the MGM Grand at Las Vegas from 11am AEST this Sunday.
