The world No.1 was full of praise for 21-year-old and joined an increasing number of tour players backing Kyrgios to dominate.

Kyrgios enters the Australian Open seeded 14th, three places ahead of six-time champion Roger Federer.

The Aussie had a mixed 2016 and copped an eight-week ban last year for tanking but did climb as high as 13 in the world rankings, his best to date.

Murray, who has also come under scrutiny at times for his on court behaviour, said Kyrgios was the master of his own destiny and had all the attributes to claim multiple grand slams.

“In terms of how far he can go as a player, it’s really up to him,” Murray said of Kyrgios.

“I think he’s got a great game. (He’s a) good athlete and smart player on the court when he’s focused — I don’t think he gets enough credit for that.

“When his mind is on the game he’s very intelligent. He likes playing on big courts against the best players which is a huge strength to have.

“Some players might freeze, but that’s not really him. He just needs a level of consistency and be a little bit more focused throughout the year and he can get right up there.”

Compatriot Bernard Tomic has been seeded 27.
