Thompson fought back from two sets to love down 6-7 4-6 6-3 6-2 6-1 to send Souza packing in the first round of the tournament.

The win comes after Souza lost the ASB Classic Final in Auckland to American Jack Sock last week.

Australian fans were getting on the back of Souza as he began to crumble, in one instance a fan in the crowd yelled “you’re done Souza” with the Portuguese man turning around to say “show some respect”.

But Thompson simply said it was all part and parcel of sport and didn't cross the line.

“Not really, I mean, it's all part of the game,” Thompson said after defeating Souza.

“It's happened to me a few times. Obviously not too much at this level. You have to deal with the crowd. They're not always going to be going for you. If you can't handle it, that's bad luck.

“(But it) definitely helped me. The crowd can influence matches. I think you saw that in the fifth set. I think he was getting pretty frustrated. If his concentration is not on the match, sure, why not.

“I don't know if he lost concentration. I think if he's talking to the crowd, he's not really engaged in the match. That was at 4-1 in the fifth set.”

Thompson will face Dominic Thiem in the next round, an opponent he has never encountered in his short career.

Thiem is currently ranked No.8 in the world while Thompson has achieved his highest position to date at No.75.

However he was not interested in the mentality of having nothing to lose.

“I just go out there every match. There's no point taking the court if you don't think you can win,” he said.

“I'm going to go out there, do my best. If it pays off, it pays off. If not, there's always another tournament.

“He's (Thiem) a quality opponent. He's top 10. He's proved himself. He made semi-finals of the French Open I'm sure he's had other great results. I'm looking forward to getting out there and testing myself against top players.”
